2 Timothy 2:15

15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

This passage is yet another call to action. We must do our best for God. But, the thing that really resonated with me is the admonition to correctly handle the Bible: the word of truth. My friend, ministry partner, and mentor, Dr. Andrew Jackson, made a memorable statement on Wednesday about truth. He called truth the primary battlefield of spiritual warfare. If the enemy distorts the truth, he wins. If we lose the battle for truth, we could lose the war. It is so important how we interpret, teach and “handle” the word of truth. The Bible has been incorrectly used throughout history from the time of Paul writing this letter to Timothy right up to the present day. I submit that the primary twist of truth comes in the form of interpreting the Bible to fit our ideas and desires. How many times have you heard someone pull verses out of context to prove their personal argument? It sounds right and may even be 98% correct, but the 2% distortion is lethal. That 2% is just enough to completely change everything and change the Bible from truth to “godless myths and old wives tales”. We must approach the Bible with reverence and humbly seek its true meaning, even when it doesn’t fit with our presuppositions and our lifestyles.
